Skydiving is not just an activity for leisure, strapped to a stranger or solo, free-falling for the adrenaline rush that it gives; skydiving is very much a popular aero-sport in India and all over the world. Though tandem skydiving is the popular activity, accessible to everyone, regardless, there are professional skydivers and others who compete in regional and international championships/tournaments. Skydiving in India is equally competitive along with the tandem skydiving activities for leisure.
Whether you are a skydiving fanatic, a pro, learning to skydive or someone just starting out yet to experience the first fall, these skydiving disciplines will very much excite your knowledge regarding the subject.
- Formation Skydiving/Belly Flying/Relative Work:
These three terms imply the same meaning. It is the first step in the levels of skydiving. Those learning to skydive begin with formation skydiving. It is the most widely practiced discipline of skydiving. The jumps are performed in the belly-to-earth configuration with the skydiver performing pre-planned formations with other jumpers, for which it is called belly flying. Refining this initial discipline of skydiving helps effectively in the learning process.
Freeflying is the most aesthetic and artistic part of skydiving. This skydiving discipline involves flying in different orientations; the simpler formations include, head-up, head-down, on an angle. The formations are pre-planned and with a perfect routine performed. The name ‘freefly’ came from the nature of this discipline, the freedom to free-fly in all directions and orientations, which enables enthusiasts to get creative in its practice.
It is one of the most challenging and interesting aspects with a growing popularity of late. This discipline requires precision as it is highly technical and involves a higher freefall speed!
- Angle Flying:
Angle Flying is one of the toughest, albeit the fastest and the strongest skydiving discipline. It is termed as the natural evolution of the skydiving discipline. It is closest to a human flying in the sky without a wing-suit!
In this discipline of skydiving, skydivers wear a wingsuit, commonly called the “flying squirrel suits”. The main purpose of the wingsuit is to transform vertical speed into horizontal movement. This special kind of wingsuit used by skydivers inflates as soon as the skydiver jumps out of a plane, the surface area is added to the human body to create a necessary ‘lift’ to reduce their speed of descent transforming into horizontal speed. It takes a skydiver a lot of practice and to pass through several levels before being qualified to fly a wingsuit.
- Swooping/Canopy Piloting:
Swooping or canopy piloting is a discipline of skydiving which involves the canopy which opens the moment the skydiver jumps off the plane. But a lot of time is still spent in the air, piloting the canopy. Once the main parachute opens, swooping involves transferring the high vertical speed into horizontal speed to be able to ‘swoop’ the ground. This discipline requires ardent skill in handling the parachute and an understanding of the canopy’s characteristics. Special parachutes are designed for swooping, to perform the fancy tactics up the air!
- Vertical Formation Skydiving:
This discipline of skydiving is the combination of formation skydiving and free-flying. The formations are completed in freefalling but they are vertical orientations as against ‘belly’ flying.
These terms though may seem alien to a first-time skydiver or those taking their first tandem skydive. But once a person, after their first skydiving experience, falls in love with the idea of being up in the air and the act of free-falling, these disciplines become a mandatory pathway to achieve the levels of being a professional skydiver. There is much more to skydiving than simply jumping out of a plane and spending a couple of minutes in the air.
